The Meaty Details

Though still drunk off of the Freedom of this past weekend, I have a few important words to share. As many of you know, there are few things I enjoy in life as much as cramming a slab of hot beef into my gaping craw, but among the shortlist are: Scotch, the late music of Beethoven, and, of course, the poetry of W.B. Yeats. In light of the latterest, I’m excited to announce that Burger Club will have it’s Second Coming at Whitman's this Saturday, July 9 at 5PM.

Mere anarchy shall be loosed upon the East Village, as twenty-four of us descend like indignant desert birds upon this fine dining establishment. We shall be taking over the entire underground section, and they will offer an exclusive Burger Club-only Prix Fixe menu just for us.

This was where it all began. In July of 2013, ten of us gathered at Whitman’s to taste and rate burgers, formed a constitution and pledged ourselves to the Glory of the Ground Cow. Now, three years since that beef-dimmed tide was loosed, we return in force to rock the meaty cradle once again.

Come my rough beasts, slouch towards Beef-lehem with me, to be reborn…

Andrew's Review
"It was 3 years ago to the day, July 24, 2013, that we first gathered our little tribe of sirloin socialites, and the testing ground for our test of ground round was none other than Whitman’s, an unassuming joint in the East Village. We were young back then, foolhardy and drunk on the ignorance of innocence…we checked off our hand-written rating sheets before retiring for the night, never knowing that our little band would soon burgeon into a ravenous herd. Fast forward three years, and we came back with a vengeance. 24 of us took over the entire basement, feasting on a prix-fixe made just for the occasion. It was glorious. Whitman’s is a special place…untainted by the yuppification of the East Village, it remains pure in its focus on low prices and tasty burgers. The variety and creativity of burgers is impressive, and there’s nary a bad one in the bunch - from the magnificent Hound (potato crisps, arugula and gruyere on a bacon-infused patty) to the Juicy Lucy (their cheese-stuffed signature) to the Peanut Butter & Bacon burger to the slammin’ Patty Melt, these are deeply satisfying (yet not so large to leave you overfull), harmonious and downright delightful packets of pleasure. The sides are equally special, from sweet potato fries to crack kale to roast corn, each holds its own special place. The service was top-notch, with our lovely waitress Jane handling our flash flood of filet-floggers without getting flustered in the least. The final result was a 8.38 overall rating, which was enough to crown Whitman’s as the new king of the heap."

The website is working like a dream! The prix fixe is a delight as well. Happy to revisit Whitmans where it all began - delicious sides and burger.

This is a phenomenal burger. The bacon-infused patty gives it that great smoky pork flavor without having to deal with the extra chew on top. The Gruyere was delicious, and judiciously applied - it wasn't a drippy mess the way it might be on a less tastefully made burger. The potato crisps were deli

9s across the board. This was a marvelous outing, The Hound is simply a delight, the chips give texture, the Gruyere is smooth as buttered baby fat, and the patty with bacon infused tastes like the love of a child. The staff is top notch and friendly as all get out. The music is on point. The vaue i

A perfect burger - very satisfying without leaving you with a feeling of clogged arteries, discomfort, or the need to take a shower. The sides were a generous size. The service was lovely and attentive, the ambience top notch.

Andrew comes in at an all time high for me at a 5. Great planning and bringing a new level of sophistication with the Square technology.

Is it too late to make a hat that says Make Andrew Great Again. His brief reign at the top was sadly just that. Brief. A fluke. I watched him drink from Adam's cup (not a euphemism) and struggle to sign us all on the wifi. The days of analog Burger Club are behind us, Andrew. Score: 2

Other than that, the burger was a delight. Seemingly simple but with complex flavors and the arugula was a nice touch. I'm here for the fries, obviously. It is the only thing that keeps this old body going.

Ambiance: I took no offense to the Rosie Riveter sign in the corner that encouraged us to buy local wine and fight the recession. But wondering if I'm just a bad feminist. 🙃

I was feeling great about everything happening here until a blur of fitted pink polo swooped in, ripped my beer out of my hands, then proceeded to chug it while I stared in humiliated disbelief. In other words, it was average showing by Andrew and he's earned another 3.0.

Solid patty melt. Could have been 10% cheesier.

A solid burger. It's certainly not healthy, but it's a patty melt. Everything is solid - good meat, great harmoniousness and and included pickle and chips was a big plus. I wish the meat had a tad more flavor but I'm not mad.

Andrew, however, is a goddamn mess. Not only did he not get the wifi set up properly, but he also drank Adams beer. Also, apparently he got a new watch. Too bad he doesn't have the "time" to look for his own damn beer. 1.15 for Andrew today. The only reason he gets points is because he brought Fay.
